New chair announced for NHS Borders

Karen Hamilton appointed to role after four months as interim chair

Thursday 25th July 2019

NHS Borders has announced the appointment of Karen Hamilton as its new chair.

Ms Hamilton has been a non-executive director for six years and has spent the last four months in the role of interim chair.

The former home carer and social worker said she had experience across various services which has given her an understanding “of the broad range of care needs throughout health and social care.”

She said: “I have enjoyed immensely ‘holding the reins’ at NHS Borders, and look forward to continue to provide leadership to the Board now that I have been appointed on a permanent basis.

“I am acutely aware of the complexities facing us all as a Board but I firmly believe we have the skills and capabilities within our organisation to meet the challenges ahead. I look forward to getting to know staff over the coming months and will welcome any opportunities to do so.”

In June, NHS Borders said it was aiming to return to a balanced budget after needing a cash bailout from the Scottish Government for the first time in recent years.

Ralph Roberts, chief executive at NHS Borders, said: “We are delighted that Karen has taken up this role. I know that she will bring an enthusiasm and commitment to the role, as well as her long experience of working in the health and care sector.”
