A new research paper is calling for the urgent development of more environmentally friendly personal protective equipment.

Nearly 500 million items of PPE have been distributed by the NHS in Scotland’s central agency since the start of the pandemic, including more than 83 million aprons and 300 million gloves.

This does not include stock purchased directly by NHS boards, the care sector and local authorities.

Most are disposable single-use plastic items that cannot be recycled and do not biodegrade, leading to concerns about the long-term environmental impact of covid-19.

This week marks the start of the Great British Beach Clean, in which the Maritime Conservation Society is asking volunteers to record the discarded masks and gloves they find.

A new paper published by the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland says further research and national investment into alternatives is “urgently” needed.

Three health boards are currently involved in a pilot for making the NHS in Scotland a net zero carbon emissions organisation by 2045 at the latest, though an NHS-wide sustainability strategy was delayed due to covid-19.

Health service leaders have agreed a range of climate commitments to make new buildings net-zero, reduce transport emissions and review the NHS supply chain. 

The Alliance says green investments after covid-19 should also be extended to social care.

It is calling for the Scottish government to create a £25m climate change fund to support the range of organisations that deliver social care.
