A national helpline has opened today for those who are at high risk of contracting coronavirus but do not have internet access or anyone to help them.

Callers will be connected to their local authority for assistance with getting essential food and medication, emotional support or contact with local volunteer groups.

Links to local social work services will also be provided for vulnerable children or adults.

The helpline - 0800 111 4000 - is aimed at those in the high risk category – including the over-70s, disabled people, anyone who requires mental health services, pregnant women or those receive a flu jab for health reasons – who do not have family or community support.

People who have been advised they are in the ‘shielding’ category who are not yet receiving support or family assistance, and cannot get online, can also use the service.

Anyone not in these categories but still looking for support is asked to visit Ready Scotland for advice.

Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said it would allow the most vulnerable who do not have a network of support to access essential help.

She said: “The coronavirus outbreak is impacting all our lives but for some it is more than a disruption – it is a severe restriction on their ability to access food, medicine or other essential services.”

Councillor Alison Evison, President of local authority body COSLA, said there had been a multi-agency approach to setting up the helpline.

She added: “These are unprecedented times. Coronavirus is having an impact on all our daily lives – but for many without any support network it is even worse.

“This national helpline and support arrangements will provide reassurance to our most vulnerable citizens.

“It is there to support those who are at home with nobody around to help them and with no other way of seeking local assistance.

“It will allow them to immediately access the essential help they need.”
