The number of patients who have died after testing positive for covid-19 has risen to ten in Scotland.

Latest figures show there are 416 confirmed cases across the country, as a raft of new measures were introduced to try to halt the spread of the virus.

There have been 5,683 confirmed cases in the UK and 283 deaths.

More than 200,000 people in Scotland who are most at risk of the virus – for example due to having specific forms of cancer or respiratory conditions – are being contacted to advise on the need for “strict isolation”.

MPs will debate emergency legislation to give ministers greater powers to tackle coronavirus in the Commons today.

On Friday, the UK Government announced the closure of all bars, restaurants, gyms and cafes.

In Scotland, ferry services are now restricted to islanders and essential services only.

The move came after concerns over people with second homes and campervans travelling to rural and island areas in bid to ‘avoid’ coronavirus.

Tourism secretary Fergus Ewing said it was “reckless and irresponsible” and that only essential travel should be undertaken.
