A London hospital leader with experience in emergency planning and service reform is to become the next Chief Executive of NHS Ayrshire & Arran.
Claire Burden will take over from Interim Chief Executive Professor Hazel Borland in January 2022.
Ms Burden, who is currently Deputy Chief Executive Officer at a northwest London hospital, has more than 17 years of management experience within the English health service.
She said: “I will be committed to engaging with the board and our strategic partners on the current challenges and opportunities, as we respond to covid and winter pressures across our integrated health and care system.
“While I will be new to NHS Scotland, I will learn quickly and will deliver on my ambition and commitment to be an asset to NHS Ayrshire & Arran, and I thank you for the opportunity to be the new Chief Executive.”
The appointment has been welcomed by Health & Care Secretary Humza Yousaf, who said: “With considerable expertise working in the reform of health and social care provision in NHS England for 17 years I know Claire will be well placed to lead the board as they move forward.”
Professor Hazel Borland has temporarily filled the chief executive role since the departure of John Burns in June 2021 to become NHS Scotland chief operating officer.
In her current role, Ms Burden is the executive lead for emergency planning, site operations and operational governance of Whipps Cross Hospital London.
This will be Ms Burden’s first role in NHS Scotland as she relocates from London to Ayrshire.
Her career in the health service began as a practicing paramedic with the East Anglian Ambulance Service.
Ms Burden then entered operational management as an Associate Director for Unscheduled Care with Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust.
More recently, Ms Burden led a quality improvement programme at Barts NHS Trust, one of the largest English health bodies.
Lesley Bowie, Chair of Ayrshire and Arran NHS Board, said: “Claire brings a wealth of skills and quality improvement experience, as well as a focus on transformation, which will drive NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s strategic ambition to reform heath and care, ensuring we improve health outcomes and achieve the healthiest life possible for our citizens.”
