Tayside’s virus response team has been stood down after ten weeks of caring for coronavirus patients.

Set up by NHS Tayside and the Dundee Health and Social Care Partnership in March, the team of volunteers from community nursing and redeployed nursing staff included COPD specialist nurses, child protection advisors, a trainee Macmillan nurse and British Red Cross carers.

The Dundee unit has spent over two months helping patients out in the community who were displaying coronavirus symptoms, providing care 24 hours a day to patients and their families.

The majority of the team is returning to their usual pre-covid-19 roles as the number of virus cases continues to fall.

District Nurse Team Leader Linda Nicol said: “The service has been well received from patients and their families and the nurses and carers, who had never worked together before, formed a strong and supportive team. 

“Their expertise and previous experiences showed how integrated teams can achieve very successful outcomes.”

Tayside has 1,671 total confirmed cases to date and eight people remain in hospital who have tested positive.
